Definitely not the Hilton, but good price and everyone was nice. We wanted to save money on the hotel and we did, without having to sacrifice comfort.

The best thing I liked about the monarch hotel was the fire escape out the window
What I didn't like about the hotel was the beds

The adventures of the "crazy" elevator..looking out my window to people who live across the way. The price was great, there was an amazing coffee shop across the way..walking distance to almost everything. I would stay there again for sure. Its old & has history behind it..Plus you know it can with stand an earthquake!!
When we arrived at night it was a little scary..no a/c, but you can open your windows. But be careful with that b/c there aren't any screens on the windows & you could easily fall out!!

Neat hotel with customer-facing and amazingly helpful staff
Perfect location, right by both Union Square and Fisherman's Wharf. Convenient proximity to a theater and downtown. Jane on Larkin nearby is a great spot for tea or coffee.

I have stayed here 3 times before at this hotel. The room charge before tax was 193.20 for 4 nights. I did pay 1.50 extra per night to use the room safe. The room was reasonably clean. It was a room with just one double bed. The room size was small, smaller than the rooms with a king or queen bed. Not many channel choices on the tv. I did not come to San Francisco to spend all the my time in the room so I had no problem with the samll room or the channel selection. The room was reasonably clean. I have stayed here 3 times before and have always been satisfied with my stay each time. This is an old hotel and is not a luxury hotel by any means. The bathroom did have a tub and shower. The room did have an iron and ironing board and hair dryer. Unlike the King and Queen rooms this one did not have a walk in closet, but the closet was adequate. Alot of people critisizing this hotel have said the area is dangerous. Now there are street people around, but they have not bothered me., I have been out late at night around the hotel and nothing bad has ever happened to me. Some reviews criticize the hotel staff for not being friendly, but I have never had to wait long to check in to my room and the bill at the end of the stay has always been correct. Service may not be with a smile and they may not be super friendly, but I could care less about that. To sum it up the service has always met my needs. I stay here mainly for the great room rates and the location is close to places I want to go to.
If you want a luxury room with all the amenities stay somewhere else and expect to pay a lot more, but if you want an inexpensive room that can meet your basic needs then this is a good place. San Francisco hotel rooms are a lot more expensive than most cities, so consider that when evaluating the price of a room.

It is in the center of many attractions in San Francisco, however this area of the city has not been "cleaned up" yet. A very active neighborhood though lots of litter.
Everything worked: the door lock, plenty of hot water, and the elevatior. Clean room, but small. Coffe in lobby, no restaurant, $24 charge for parking.

Offered good complementary coffee.
I noticed an extra charge on my credit card for $25.00. I called the hotel this morning and was told it was a "service charge" that would be refunded. I will be keeping a close watch for this on my statement.
